Sterling Furniture - Professional Services Case Study

Efficient solutions for integrating a newly acquired subsidiary with the parent company’s ICT requirements with no loss of daily operations.

Background
Sterling Furniture, an independent Scottish furniture retailer for over thirty years, has been developing their Tillicoultry site constantly over that time and now has a unique shopping and visitor attraction complex unrivalled anywhere in Scotland. In 1974 the founder, George Knowles Snr, saw the growing popularity of 'out-of-town' retail developments in America. He converted a disused mill in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, into the largest furniture showroom in Scotland.

The Brief
In February 2008 Sterling Furniture purchased a competitor with four branches across Scotland. The IT team at Sterling required immediate assistance with incorporating systems, from IT infrastructure through to stock control and accounts, with a view to bringing the new branches into the existing Sterling infrastructure.

The Approach
Adventi provided an infrastructure consultant/project manager for 2 days a week over several months to ensure a smooth integration, using appropriate technologies and providing a central contact for liaising with all suppliers – new and pre-existing – whilst minimising risk to both companies.

The Solution
With a full understanding of systems and business process, Adventi produced a project plan, charting the integration.  Using Cisco technology, Adventi securely bridged the two area networks, allowing the companies to communicate effectively and share information. Adventi then incorporated each of the new sites onto the Sterling network with no break in operations. Within only a few months, the new sites had effectively become additional branches of Sterling with fully cohesive operational processes.
